About the club

Forty-six seasons in.

Midweek Bass Anglers of Arizona has been running fair, competitive draw-format tournaments on Arizona's lakes since 1979. We're 47 years strong and counting.

How it works

Midweek Bass is a non-profit bass club for anglers who can fish on a Wednesday and want serious, fairly run tournaments. The format is simple: meet on a Wednesday, fish a draw tournament, weigh in alive, pay the winner. Eleven events a year, January through November, on the best bass water in Arizona.

Boaters and Co-Anglers are paired by random computerized draw before each event — you don't need to own a boat to compete. Co-Anglers pay their Boater a lake-specific Fair Share Fee that covers operating expenses (gas, maintenance proportional to distance from Phoenix).

We hold club cookouts the night before our two two-day Apache Lake events (March and November), and we run a season-long Angler of the Year race with cash, trophy, and bragging rights for the points leader.

What we haven't changed since 1979: the day, the format, and the way we treat each other on the water.

Meetings & events

The club meets monthly. Members and prospective members are welcome — meetings are the easiest way to see how the club operates before applying.

Two of the eleven tournaments — March and November at Apache Lake — are 2-day events with a Tuesday club cookout the night before. Those are the social high points of the season.

Year-to-date Angler of the Year standings are posted in the Member Portal beginning May 2026, after the season's first four events conclude.

FAQ

Real questions from prospective members — pulled from what we get asked most.

I don't own a boat. Can I still participate?

Yes. Many of our members don't own boats. Tournament Teams consist of one Boater and one Co-Angler, paired by random computerized draw before each event. Co-Anglers pay their Boater a lake-specific Fair Share Fee on tournament day to cover gas and operating expenses (the further the lake from Phoenix, the higher the Fair Share).

Can my friend and I fish as a Team if we both join?

Only if the random draw assigns you both to the same Team for that event. Teams are mixed by random computer draw before every tournament — no requesting partners.

I can't attend monthly meetings. Can I still fish tournaments?

Yes, you can fish tournaments without attending meetings. You'll miss out on engagement benefits and the social side of the club, though — meeting attendance is what keeps the club running.

What does it cost to join and fish?

Annual membership dues are $40 (or $43 if paid online). Tournament entry is $60 per event (or $63 online). Co-Anglers also pay a lake-specific Fair Share Fee directly to their Boater on tournament day. The waiver is required and is included automatically with online applications.

What is the minimum age requirement?

Members must be 18 years of age or older.

How are Tournament Teams paired?

For each tournament, Teams (one Boater + one Co-Angler) are formed by random computerized draw. The draw runs before the event and is genuinely random — no requesting partners.

Is specific equipment required?

Boats must have all State- and Federally-required safety equipment. USCG-approved life jackets are worn whenever the combustion engine is running. Kill switch attached at all times underway. Working aerated live well required.

Is a specific skill level required?

No. We have current and former tournament veterans, and we have brand-new tournament anglers who joined to learn. The draw format means you'll fish with both kinds — most newer members say it's the fastest way they've ever improved.

How do I get more information about joining?

Email any board member directly (see the Board of Directors section above) or send a note to president@midweekbassaz.com. We reply within a few days, usually faster.
